Quick answer
Backup creates recoverable copies of data. Disaster recovery restores the services and dependencies needed to operate after disruption. A restore test should prove that the required data and applications can be used, not just that a backup file exists.
Set recovery objectives
Recovery point objective describes tolerable data loss measured in time. Recovery time objective describes the target time to restore a service. Different workloads can have different priorities. Agree these with business owners rather than selecting them only from software defaults.
Inventory dependencies
A recovered application may still need identity, DNS, network access, certificates, licences and connected databases. Document the recovery order and access required. Store instructions where they remain available during an outage.
Protect the backup environment
Restrict administrative access, review retention and consider independent or immutable copies where appropriate. Backups can be affected by compromised credentials or misconfiguration. Separate responsibility and test the ability to recover without relying on the failed system.
Use a practical test scenario
Choose a representative file, application or workload. Restore into a controlled environment, check integrity and let a business user validate it. Record elapsed time, missing dependencies and changes required. Avoid disrupting production during a test.
Turn the result into action
A failed test is useful if it leads to a corrected plan. Assign owners to missing permissions, capacity, instructions and data issues. Repeat tests after significant system changes and on an agreed schedule.
