A technical SEO audit that produces an actionable repair list

Audit crawl access, indexing, canonicals, page templates and conversion paths, then prioritise fixes by business impact.

Start with pages the business needs

List the services, locations, products and guides that should attract relevant visitors. Compare this inventory with your sitemap, crawl and Search Console data. Classify missing URLs, redirects, errors and intentionally excluded pages. An audit is more useful when each finding relates to a page that matters instead of presenting a long unprioritised warning list.

Check what a crawler can retrieve

Verify status codes, robots directives, canonical tags and ordinary links to important pages. Core content should be available without requiring a user to press a button or finish an animation. Review pagination so older guides remain reachable. A sitemap can help discovery, but it should not be the only route into a disconnected section of the site.

Review templates, not just individual pages

A duplicate title or broken heading often comes from a shared template. Check representative service, blog, category, search and project pages. Separate substantive pages from thin archives and internal filters. Decide which deserve indexing based on usefulness. Fixing the template can resolve repeated problems while preserving owner-written content.

Connect performance to user tasks

Measure representative pages on the intended hosting and mobile conditions. Check image dimensions, unnecessary scripts, layout shifts and the time before a visitor can use navigation or a form. Lab measurements help diagnose issues but do not establish real-user Core Web Vitals. Record the tested environment so later comparisons are meaningful.

Write fixes that can be accepted

For each issue, record affected URLs, business effect, proposed change, owner and verification. After deployment, recheck the specific status, content or metadata that changed. Monitor search and lead data over time; a successful technical fix does not guarantee an immediate ranking change. The output should be an ordered repair plan with evidence, not only a score.

Take this checklist into your planning meeting

  • Important-page inventory
  • Status, canonical and robots checks
  • Template-level diagnosis
  • Owner, priority and verification per fix
