Plan enrolment, application access, remote support and device retirement around business ownership.

Separate company devices from personal devices

List laptops, phones, tablets and shared terminals. Record ownership, operating systems and the business applications each device must access. Decide what the company can manage on a personally owned device and communicate that scope clearly. Device management tools have different platform capabilities, so request a coverage matrix for the actual devices rather than assuming every policy works everywhere.

Pilot enrolment and everyday work

Test sign-in, email, application installation, updates and authorised remote support with representative users. Shared reception or warehouse devices may need a different configuration from a manager laptop. Document what happens when enrolment fails or a device is offline. Keep a support route available to staff so they can resolve problems without disabling the intended controls.

Define actions for lost or departing devices

Agree who can lock a device, remove company access or wipe data, and which approvals are required. Confirm what each action affects on personal and company-owned devices. Test the process safely with a spare device before relying on it during an incident. Record recovery and replacement arrangements for the employee whose work is interrupted.

Manage the whole lifecycle

Connect procurement, enrolment, maintenance, reassignment and retirement to the asset register. Review inactive devices and accounts. Record licence and administration ownership when using an external provider. Include secure disposal and the removal of company data in the exit process. Device management is a recurring operating responsibility, not only the installation of an agent.
