Compare security boundaries, application needs and management scope before selecting a firewall or support contract.
Draw the paths that need protection
Map office users, guests, remote access, branch links and public-facing applications. A router moves traffic between networks; a firewall applies policy to traffic at a defined boundary. A web application firewall addresses a different application-facing role. Document where each proposed control will sit. The right design follows your actual traffic and responsibilities, rather than assuming one device protects every path.
Evaluate products with representative workloads
Fortinet, Sophos, Cisco and other platforms have different models, licences and management arrangements. Request a comparison using your traffic, enabled inspection functions, remote users and growth assumptions. Labels such as NGFW and UTM do not establish performance or included subscriptions. Ask the supplier to identify exclusions and demonstrate required workflows instead of relying only on a maximum throughput figure.
Define the management contract
Record responsibility for policy changes, firmware, subscription renewals, configuration backups and incident investigation. Agree approvals for allowing a new application or changing remote access. Identify the route for urgent faults and what happens if hardware replacement is required. Keep company-controlled access to configuration records. A firewall installation and an ongoing managed firewall service should have separate, clear acceptance points.
Plan change and replacement safely
Check the current device lifecycle, support availability and recurring faults before deciding on replacement. Schedule migration around important applications, with a documented fallback. Test normal workflows, guest separation and authorised remote access. Review the rules after launch to remove temporary exceptions. Keep policy ownership visible in the business rather than accumulating changes that nobody can explain.
Before you request a proposal
✓ Network and application boundaries
✓ Workload and subscription assumptions
✓ Policy change approvals
✓ Backups and support ownership
✓ Migration tests and rollback
Discuss your business requirements
