Choosing CCTV cameras: analog, IP, dome, bullet and PTZ

Select cameras from the view you need, the existing installation and the people who will operate the system.

Select cameras from the view you need, the existing installation and the people who will operate the system.

Define the view rather than buying a shape

Mark entrances, counters, circulation routes and sensitive boundaries on a site plan. State what the operator needs to see at each location: general activity, an identifiable person or another specific detail. Dome, bullet and PTZ describe different camera arrangements, not a promise of image quality. Compare representative footage from the proposed model under the actual lighting and mounting conditions.

Check the analog or IP migration scope

An existing analog installation may reuse some infrastructure, while an IP design introduces its own network, recorder and power requirements. Inspect the actual cable routes, condition and compatibility before assuming reuse will save money. Include recorder capacity and client access in the comparison. Request separate costs for retained equipment, replacement devices, cabling and configuration so the trade-offs are visible.

Match moving cameras to an operating procedure

A PTZ camera can change its view, which also means its current position may leave another area unobserved. Decide whether fixed coverage is still needed alongside it. Clarify who controls movement, which presets are used and what happens when no operator is watching. Compare wired and wireless options through power, connectivity, maintenance and recording requirements, not only installation convenience.

Compare brands through the complete system

Hikvision, Dahua, UNV and other product ranges contain different capabilities and limitations. Ask for model-specific compatibility with the recorder, analytics and viewing application. Check warranty, supported updates and the scope of ongoing maintenance. Accept the installation using the agreed views, playback and access tests. A brand name alone does not prove that every camera in its range suits your premises.
